Born With PCOS

by Mya

I was born with ovarian cysts.

I never really knew until I was older. I only knew I had to get ultrasounds done to see something in my body.

I started my period at age 12, which was considered late in my family. I hadn't had a regular period. I just told myself I was regulating. After a while, I dug into some research and found out about PCOS.

It all clicked. Even though I was young, I had always wanted a large family, so when I read "Infertility" my heart stopped.

I read all the other symptoms and knew right away. I talked to my parents about it and they confirmed it.

Symptoms: My acne acted up a lot. I never really ate healthy but I was very active and weight gain wasn't a big issue. There was still no way to control my periods. They started whenever, wherever. Which was pretty embarrassing.

I still struggle with PCOS. I hope to one day have a big family, but I'm still a teenager so there's no rush for that. Thank you for allowing me to share my story and I wish all of you the best on yours :)

You're Not Alone!
by: PCOS Editor

Hi Mya,

Well, you're certainly not alone! I suspect that the majority of women with PCOS are born with it, which appears to be due in part to altered fetal programming.

This disorder is a problem for a lot of teens and even young girls. Ovarian cysts, early puberty, weight gain, and acne are just a few of the signs of early polycystic ovary syndrome.

Have a look at Emily's story. She is 16 years old. That discussion thread has some good tips for you to think about.

Best of luck to you! Please check back again and let us know how you're doing.
