PCOS Risk: Processed Foods May Increase Depression

Depression is a very common symptom of PCOS. If you suffer from both polycystic ovary syndrome and depression, here's some important news.

A new study has shown that processed foods can make you depressed.

In contrast, whole foods can relieve depression.

The University College London in the UK studied 3,486 individuals over a five-year span. They discovered that depression was associated with consumption of a "processed foods" diet (heavily loaded with sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains, high-fat dairy products).

However, the people who consumed "whole foods" (heavily loaded with vegetables, fruits and fish) had much less depression.

It appears that what you eat can influence your mood and whether you feel depressed.

We recommend that you switch over to a diet of whole, fresh foods. If you're looking for a detailed diet of such foods, this PCOS diet book may interest you.

Almonds vs. Complex Carbohydrates for PCOS-Related Weight Loss

If you have a challenge with controlling your weight, do you avoid eating nuts because they are so fattening?

If so, this research may interest you.

A recent study at the City of Hope National Medical Center examined 32 individuals who consumed a low-calorie diet with 84 grams per day of almonds, resulting in a diet that was 39 fat and 32 carbohydrate, compared with 33 people who consumed a low-calorie diet consisting of 18 fat and 53 complex carbohydrate. The two diets were equivalent calories and protein.

In other words, one group of people ate a high fat diet (including almonds). The other group ate a low-fat diet.

So what happened?

Surprisingly, the diet supplemented with almonds was associated with greater reductions in weight/body mass index, waist circumference, fat mass, total body water and systolic blood pressure.

There was a 62 greater reduction in weight/body mass index, 50 greater reduction in waist circumference, and a 56 greater reduction in fat mass seen in the almond low-calorie diet compared with the complex carbohydrate low-calorie diet.

What's interesting in this small study is that the amount of protein was the same; only the relative proportion of complex carbohydrate was reduced and replaced with fat.

If you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), you may have found it quite difficult to lose weight. Although this condition is partially caused by disordered hormones, you can make helpful modifications to your diet.

In moderation, raw nuts and seeds are excellent sources of nutrition and provide helpful essential fatty acids (EFAs) -- and they may help you to control your weight, provided your total calorie intake is low.

This is not to say that complex carbohydrates are bad. However, you can be selective about which carbohydrates you eat. For more information on complex carbohydrates, visit our web page about the

Woman with PCOS Restores Normal Cycle with Fish Oil

Hello,

I just wanted to make a quick comment about the article regarding fish oil.

I have had PCOS since I was sixteen years old. I am now 24.

I have struggled greatly with all sorts of symptoms, including a COMPLETE lack of a period for the first two years of diagnosis.

I have never taken birth control, as I personally don't like the idea. So, when I was eighteen, I saw a holistic doctor.

He put me on fish oil, and the following month I had my period!

I have discovered that if I do not take fish oil, I will not have a period, but if I do take it, I will have one.

So, if any woman with PCOS out there is doubting the effectiveness of taking fish oil, it is definitely worth trying.

PCOS Women Are Super-Sensitive to Stress

When's the last time your doctor asked you if you are under chronic stress?

Stress hormones may increase anxiety, excessive eating, weight gain, belly fat, infertility, miscarriage, ovarian cysts and a host of other health problems.

Chronic stress is a particular problem for women with PCOS because they appear to have an exaggerated response to stress, as shown in a recent study from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.

Thirty two women with PCOS and 32 non-PCOS women had to do a public speaking assignment. Biochemical markers showed the PCOS women had a more stressful experience. They also showed increased psychological stress compare to the other group.

The researchers concluded: "The altered stress reactivity in PCOS patients may constitute a link between depression, overweight, and the cardiovascular and diabetes risks associated with the diagnosis."

In other words, it's more important for you than other people to find ways to reduce chronic stress, regardless of its source.

Even though stress is "invisible", it is real. Stress management is important even if your doctor ignores it. Successful stress management will definitely help you improve your PCOS situation.
